Chances are you are a karaoke fan, but have you ever got bored of simply singing in front of a screen at a KTV lounge? Newly-developed AR or Augmented Reality technology could make this popular leisure activity more interactive.

At a karaoke bar in downtown Shenzhen, new equipment has attracted many new customers. The singer stands in front of a green screen and the image merges into a virtual background. This technology is called AR or Augmented Reality, and China is one of countries piloting the technology in karaoke systems.

"Young people like me love new technology. I invited some friends of mine to come, and they really liked it," said Li Junyao, Karaoke fan.

"It’s my first time seeing this, and it looks like fun. Today I just watched them sing and didn't join in because it's all so new," said Karaoke fan Xing Qun.

Karaoke fans like me can’t resist having a try. When the music kicks in and the spotlight is on you...well, for 3 minutes you are a pop star.

You don’t have to wear any devices on your head. All you need to do is just get in front of the camera and start your performance. At the moment, there are not too many backgrounds to choose from. Maybe in the future they can provide more options

The AR system also allows users to share their video on social media apps, or directly onto a live stream platform.
The KTV manager is already a fan of this new technology.

"We put the equipment in the lobby for people to sample for free, and we plan to install more sets and make it a regular service when the technology is more developed. It’ll bring more business for us," said Chen Pengyu, manager of Happy Zone KTV Bar.

The AR equipment developer says this developing tech could breathe new life into many many traditional sectors, to provide consumers with a better interactive experience.

"We can combine the technology with different aspects of our lives and customize services according to consumers’ demands. We are quite optimistic about AR's application in the future," said Zhou Weichao, marketing manager of Fujian KTVME Network Technologies Co.

In China, thousands of KTV lounges have already adopted this new AR equipment. According to Digi-Capital, an investment bank for mobile apps and games, the AR market will generate 120 billion US dollars in revenue by 2020. The technology is expected to have great potential in gaming, advertising, education and many other sectors.
