In the women's open water swimming, China's Xin Xin got the best result ever for her country in the 10-kilometer event. But the race was not without controversy as Aurelie Muller of France was disqualified at the finish.

The Netherlands Sharon van Rouwendaal won gold, but Muller was judged to have pushed Italian Rachele Bruni's arm to prevent her from touching the finishing board. A review resulted in disqualification for Muller which meant China's Xin moved up to fourth place for the historic result.

To gymnastics and in the balance beam, American stand out Simone Biles would slip which allowed Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands to claim gold. Biles would still win bronze for her fourth Olympic medal.

In cycling, Italy's Elia Viviani took gold in the men's omnium while Great Britain's sprint specialist Mark Cavendish won silver, the first Olympic medal for Cavendish who is second all-time in Tour de France stage wins.

Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was sent home by his own team for poor sportsmanship, after he refused to shake Israel's Or Sasson's hand following a bout in the men's 100-plus-kilogram division.

It was a big day for Charlotte Dujardin who retained her title in equestrian's individual dressage with the gold keeping Great Britain in second place in then medal table. She was then surprised to see a message from her boyfriend on the scoreboard asking, "Will you marry me?" The second day in a row there's been a proposal.
