The 5th Minorities Art Festival of China is well underway, which displays China’s diverse ethnic culture. One opera performance presented by the ethnic Yi artists from Sichuan province takes center stage at the festival.

Set in 1930s, the ethnic opera tells the story of a Red Army soldier and two youths of the local Yi ethnic group of Daliang mountainous region. Although there are minor skirmishes at first, the two sides quickly come to reconciliation and cooperation at the end. The unique singsing styles, colorful costumes, and elaborate stage design give the story an added boost.

The unique singsing styles, colorful costumes, and elaborate stage design give the story an added boost.

"It's a story about the timeless themes of love and commitment. It's set to the backdrop of modern China but focuses on the fates of individuals," said Li Ting, scriptwriter.

"I believe their story can still resonate with people today. And the unique culture of the Yi people has been integrated into the show. "

The performing troupe of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture was established in 1956. It was the earliest professional performing troupe of the Yi ethnic group.

In addition to its star singing and acting ensembles, the company also has its own symphony orchestra which is already widely known locally.

This show debuted in 2013 and toured various cities across the country, and won both provincial and national awards.

"Singing is my stong suit, but I have to act as well which is quite a challenge for me as I've never done that before. At first, I can't even read the script fluently because my mandarin is not very good," said Shen Jun, actor.

"But here I am with the help of my cast and crew. I'm just excited and grateful to represent our ethnic group here in the capital, and I want to make them proud."

Other ethnic groups are represented at the event as well. During the month-long festival, 35 troupes will take centre stage at various venues in Beijing.

There are 55 minority groups in China and each one has its own distinct characteristics. Here at the 5th Minorities Art Festival of China, representatives from across the country are showcasing special types of performances that are unique to their ethnic groups. This year's event will run until September 14th.
