In the fifth installment of the Bourne film series, simply titled “Jason Bourne,” Matt Damon returns as the amnesiac spy, with Alicia Vikander joining the cast as shadowy CIA agent and former-hacker Heather Lee. The two leading actors are in Beijing to promote the upcoming film, which will be released in China August 23.

Damon’s popularity in China has increased since his movie “The Martian,” which was a box office hit. He is hoping “Jason Bourne” will also be a success.

“Hopefully it will find a big audience here in China, but we'll see, the audience will be the judge,” said Damon.

“It’s a good place for every film, it’s one of the biggest markets in the world and it’s the second biggest right now and it is only growing, so there are huge movie fans here, which is awesome and for people like me who make movies for a living. This is an incredibly important place.”

The new movie sees Bourne resurface several years after his disappearance at the conclusion of “The Bourne Ultimatum,” searching for hidden truths about his past and family.

“The Bourne movies are always about something. The last three that we did were very much about that decade, and the war on terror and everything that was happening then. And this movie hopefully is about now,” Damon said.

“Our lives have changed kind of in front of our eyes, so incredibly quickly and then of course there’s a major issue of privacy versus security and these digital lives that we all have. It’s dawned on us that they say a lot about us and who we are, and privy to that information and who should be. You know, these are the central questions that face every country in the world right now.”

Next, Damon will star in “The Great Wall,” one of the biggest Chinese-U.S. co-productions to date, directed by Chinese film-maker Zhang Yimou. It also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau.
