Stay in the Olympic city, and look again at that odd situation involving the women's 4x100 meter relay. The United States, had to re-run their heat, alone, in order to book their place in the final. As a result, the original eighth-placed Team China was eliminated despite filing two appeals against the solo run.

The American quartet of Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner and Morolake Akinosun clocked 41.77 to eliminate China from Friday's final.

The unprecedented solo re-run completed a surreal day for the Americans, who had earlier been left facing disqualification after a dropped baton exchange between Felix and Gardner in the morning heats.

The reigning Olympic champs protested, claiming Brazilian Franciela Krasucki bumped Felix before the handover.

Officials duly disqualified Brazil -- but ruled the Americans must run again. Chinese officials protested the decision, not once, but twice, before and after the solo run. Both protests were dismissed by the athletics governing body, the IAAF.
