The torch has been doused on the first-ever Olympic Games to be held in South America, after 17 days of competition in Rio de Janeiro.

The US finished on top of the medal list, with 46 gold medals, 121 overall.

Great Britain nipped China for second place by winning more gold metals 27 to 26. China won more total medals, 70-to-67, but the table is based on golds.

Russia competed with about a third of its squad sidelined, but managed to finish fourth with 19 gold medals, and 56 overall. Germany round out the top five.

IOC President Thomas Bach officially closed the Games with a samba-fueled extravaganza Monday morning Beijing time and gave the Olympic flag to Tokyo, the host of the 2020 Olympic Summer Games.
