Muqam performance from Xinjiang charms Beijing

At the ongoing 5th Minorities Art Festival of China, actors are staging special performances that are unique to their ethnic groups. Last Friday, the “Impression of Muqam” charmed the audience at the Mei Lanfang Grand Theater.

This unique melody opened the night. It is known as Muqam, perhaps the most famous genre of Uyghur music. It is ancient too. The art dates back to the 15th century. And it is part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity according to UNESCO.

The performance, titled “Impression of Muqam,” drew together both imperial and folk Uyghur Arts. Along with folk dance, the show vividly depicts the lives of the minority group. The two-hour performance featured more than 30 traditional instruments, and it was one thatdeeply moved the audience.

The Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam has developed four main regional styles: the Twelve Muqam, Dolan Muqam, Turpan Muqam and Hami Muqam.

Among the four, a dozen sets of Muqam music are sorted out to represent the art. In 2005, the Twelve Muqam was defined by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

As many as 35 representatives from across the country will participate in this year’s festival, and it will run until September 14.
