According to a recent report by the United Nations Development Program, China has joined a group of countries with a high level of human development.

It says China's Human Development Index two years ago was ranked 90th among 188 countries and regions. However, improvements are being made as 660 million people were lifted out of poverty from 1978 to 2010. Adding to that is an increase in average life expectancy -- from 68 years in 1980 to 75 in 2010 -- higher than the global average of 70.

On the education front, China has comprehensively achieved nine years of compulsory education. Over the past decade, 99 percent of children were enrolled in school.

The report also stated that of the 47 countries which were classified as having a low level of human development in 1990, China is the only one to break through to achieve a high level.

However, it also points to some problems, such as growing inequality in areas like income, education, medical resources, and life expectancy.
