Scientists from France, Germany and the United States are set to end their year-long experiment to practice living on Mars without leaving Earth.

For the past year, they have been living in a mockup Mars habitat on a Hawaiian volcano. In a solar-powered dome that covers an area of only 93 square meters. Since entering, the six crew members have ventured out only for simulated spacewalks in mock space suits.

The experiment is the fourth and longest so far in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation Project. The project is funded by NASA and overseen by the University of Hawaii.  The aim is to create guidelines for future Mars missions in the US human space program.
