Berlin: EU-US free trade deal has failed

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel says the talks between the European Union and the United States over a free trade deal have failed.

According to Gabriel, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or T-TIP negotiations failed because the US refuses to accept terms that other trade partners -- like Canada -- accept.

"In my opinion, the talks with the United States have de facto failed, even though nobody really wants to admit that. We have held 14 negotiation rounds, for 27 treaty chapters, but haven't been able to agree on a single chapter. That is because the United States wants different terms than the EU might have with Canada -- for example," Sigmar Gabriel said.

"The United States is angry that Canada might come to a different agreement with us, or rather with Europe. The Americans don't want that to happen. But we can't subject ourselves blindly to American proposals. Europe has its own way of living."
