Victory marks first-ever win for Chinese at event

China's Wang Yafan was facing Van Uytvanck of Belguim. And the Chinese would fire this for a winner, en route to taking the first set 6-3.

German can become No. 1 if she betters S. Williams at event

Germany's Angelique Kerber enjoyed a stress-free passage into the second round after her opponent Polona Hercog retired due to injury. The second seed can top the rankings if she matches or betters what Serena Williams does at the event.

Other results saw  last year's runner-up Roberta Vinci grab a straight sets win. Third seed Garbine Muguruza  battled back from a set down to beat Elise Mertens. And former world number one Caroline Wozniacki beat home favourite Taylor Townsend in three sets.
