U.S. Open: Victory marks first-ever win for Chinese at event

Top of the order is tennis from Flushing Meadows New York and the first round of the US Open. China are doing well in the women's main draw where three players prevailed in their opening matches on Monday and have advanced to the second round. And on Tuesday, Zhang Shuai was hoping to join her compatriots by taking down Australia's Ellen Perez. 

And Zhang in the far court would cruise through the first set, going on to win it 6-1 in a dominant display.

And the Chinese would continue her strong play in the second. Perez goes long on match point and Zhang takes it 6-1 for her first ever win at the tournament.

Chinese reaches second round for third consecutive year

Another Chinese in action as Wang Qiang in the far court faces the 23rd seed from Russia Daria Kasatkina. Wang takes the first set 6-4 when Kasatkina goes wide.

Bu the Russian rights the ship in the second. Wang pulls her forehand wide and Kasatkina would go on to claim the frame 6-2.

But the decider is all Wang as the Chinese closes out a three set victory, 6-2 in the third, and she is into the second round for the third straight year.

Lepchenko comes back to beat Chinese 4-6, 7-6, 6-3

But the second would require a tie break and Lepchenko ties it up at 9-all with a nice forehand.

Lepchenko now has set point and she takes it with another big forehand down the line.

We now go to match point and the American wins it with an ace. 6-3 in the third as Peng is eliminated in the first round.

Fifth seeded Romanian outclasses Flipkens of Belgium 6-0, 6-2

Fifth seeded Romanian Simona Halep makes short work of Kirsten Flipkens who sprays it wide after losing the first set 6-0.

The second isn't much closer as Halep wins it with a forehand to the corner to take it 6-2 and book her spot in the second round.

But some big names fell on day two as the 29th seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia was beaten 7-6, 6-1 by Czech Denisa Allertova. And Canada's Eugenie Bouchard who was the runner up at Wimbledon in 2014 was defeated by another Czech, Katerina Siniakova in three sets. And there was a major scare for two-time former champion Venus Williams before she overcame Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova.
