Chinese President meets world leaders in Hangzhou

Chinese President Xi Jinping has been holding bilateral talks with world leaders who have arrived in Hangzhou for the G20 Summit.

During his meeting with Argentine President Mauricio Macri, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the two countries to push for cooperation in trade, investment and finance.

China and Argentina are both major emerging market economies, and they also are strategic partners. Macri proposed that the two countries do more on the energy, economy, infrastructure and tourism fronts.

Looking for a comprehensive and friendly relationship: This is the message Xi has sent to his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma. Placing a high value on China’s ties with Africa, Xi said China will provide unshakable support for Africa’s peace and development.

Zuma said South Africa appreciates China’s contribution to Africa’s development. He also thanked China for making interconnected development a topic of the G20 summit.

Another leader invited to the summit is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Turkey. China pledged to deepen its anti-terror and security activities with Ankara. After the meeting, the two sides signed a series of agreements in areas including energy and customs inspections.

On behalf of the African Union, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno was invited to this year’s summit. China and Chad have seen an all-round increase of ties in recent years. Xi said China encourages its businesses to invest in Chad, to help the country develop sustainable growth.

For his part, Deby appreciated China’s support for Africa and said Chad is willing to strengthen ties with China in the fields of renewable energy, trade, and healthcare.

Xi also welcomed Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s attendance at the G20 summit. The two sides expressed wishes to maintain the positive momentum in their relationship by seeking economic growth and reform.

China and Italy have a long history of friendship. In accordance with that long history, Renzi said Italy is willing to participate in China’s Belt and Road initiative and wished the G20 summit a great success.
