Just after the curtain fell on the spectacular G20 Gala in Hangzhou, CCTV had an exclusive interview with Zhang Yimou, the director of the show. He shared his insights on the cultural function of the gala.

Tian Wei: "Which is the most innovated part to you as this meeting is all about innovation?"

Zhang Yimou: "I think there are many parts. Such as the "Swan Lake." I believe many people have watched the show itself many times. But this new form of performance, dancing on a lake surface with special effects - I believe it is a completely new show that you will not see anywhere else."

Director Zhang Yimou: Gala bridges differences

Tian Wei: "The world is very interested in China's soft power, and what exact is the soft power, what are you trying to convey?"

Zhang Yimou: "I think first of all we are trying to pass beauty. Among the music we selected, they are either the Great Tunes of The World, or the most famous pieces in China. Music is without borders. With the beautiful melodies of music, the audience do not have to know what stories are being told. Instead, they can just enjoy the picturesque music. All the scenes, lights and music, had perfect coordination with the performers - and that is enough."

Tian Wei: "Do we know our culture well...the most blended part of our culture."

Zhang Yimou: "The human race has so many different cultures. Although we speak different languages, and we have different cultural backgrounds, these cultures have a lot in common in essence. Just like this year's G20 Summit, this Gala serves to bridge differences between cultures, and for people to reach common ground."
