The potential of an all-Williams showdown still loomed. Serena and Venus were on a collision course for a date in the Semi-finals. The younger sister -- Serena, would do her part, easily disposing of Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, and picking up her record 308th Grand Slam singles win - overtaking Roger Federer for most all-time.
Serena is already holding a 4-1 lead in the opener and is her ruthless self, as smashing away a backhand winner en route to claiming the frame 6-2.
The world number one would punctuate her victory with a service winner, downing Shvedova 6-2, 6-3 to set the record for most singles wins at the majors.
"It's a huge number. I think it's very significant actually. I think it's something that, you know, just really talks about the length of my career, in particular. I've been playing for a really long time, but also, you know, given that consistency up there. That's something that I'm really proud of," said Serena Williams.
As for older sister Venus -- she was looking like a good bet to move one, after claiming the opening set against World No. 10 Karolina Pliskova, and takes a 3-1 edge in the second, as she chases down this volley.
The Czech would win the second set though, and forces a decider, and is serving for the match, only Venus is able to get a late break, and forces a tiebreak thanks to this forehand winner.
But it would by Pliskova that progresses, winning the extra session 7-3, and claiming a three-set win and moving into her first grand slam quarter-final, and ending any chance of an all-williams encounter later in the tournament.
And for the results of other matches, Ana Konjuh beat fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets and fifth seed Simona Halep beat No.11-Carla Suarez Navarro to advance to the last eight.
