Over the past 25 years, the political, commercial, social and cultural cooperation between China and ASEAN nations has yielded significant achievements. As ASEAN's most active partner, China has always supported the development of ASEAN nations.

In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed working with ASEAN countries to construct the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and to establish a community of common destiny.

In the same year, Premier Li Keqiang initiated the 2-PLUS-7 cooperation framework at the 16th China-ASEAN leaders' meeting in Brunei. Together with ASEAN leaders, Li outlined the roadmap of a shared "diamond decade."

China also initiated a number of regional mechanisms to promote regional ties including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Silk Road Fund.
