US Secretary of State John Kerry is heading to Geneva for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on a possible peace deal in Syria.

The US Department of State said that Kerry and Lavrov's discussion would follow their recent conversations on Syria, focusing on reducing violence, expanding humanitarian aid, and moving towards a solution to end the war.

The statement came as a sudden reversal after the department said earlier it did not believe a meeting was worthwhile.

Meanwhile, Lavrov has arrived in Geneva and briefly met with UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura.

Over the past few weeks, Russia and the US have been working on a ceasefire deal with hopes to ease the situation in Syria.

But the two countries failed to reach an agreement after their leaders held talks earlier this week on the sidelines of the G20 summit in China.
