China has issued a white paper hailing new progress made in protecting human rights as the country bolsters the rule of law across the board. The white paper was published by the State Council Information Office.

It says the judiciary is the last line of defense to safeguard social fairness and justice, and judicial protection of human rights is an important part of human rights progress in a country.

It notes that China has streamlined its system for admitting cases by moving away from case review toward direct registration. The Criminal Procedure Law has been revised.  New legal principles include the exclusion of unlawful evidence. Protection for the rights and interests of private parties in administrative lawsuits has been strengthened under the Administrative Procedure Law.

The country also enacted the first Anti-Domestic Violence Law in 2015.

The white paper highlights pilot programs to establish a national judicial assistance system, and the abolishment of the system of re-education through labor.
