A county consists of a group of islands lying about 160 kilometers east of Xiamen across the Taiwan Strait. A number of historical sites suffered major damage from Typhoon Meranti. Roads were blocked in many areas due to scattered tree branches. Meanwhile, fishing boats were seen half submerged and ships stranded in the sea.

Strong gales and heavy rain battered the county on Thursday before hitting the south and east coasts of the Chinese mainland. The local meteorological agency says the typhoon was the strongest to make landfall on the islands in 21 years. The typhoon packed wind speeds of up to 370 kilometers per hour.
