WADA leak brings drug exemptions to spotlight

09-22-2016 10:35 BJT

The recent information leak from the World Anti-Doping Agency has caused multi-fold controversy. While the hacking activity itself is illegal, the leaks reveal how some international Olympic athletes have been granted exemptions for banned substances.

Therapeutic-use exemptions have different standards

These exemptions, which allow certain athletes to take banned substances for medical treatments, are issued individually by international sports associations.

Professor Henry Peter says that those organizations have different standards when granting exemptions, which he thinks is the biggest flaw of the system. Peter says there are grey areas in both rule-making and practicing.

He adds that though the personal records of athletes should be protected, the athletes themselves have to be transparent on this issue, especially if they are Olympic gold-medal hopefuls.
