A Chinese Premier is on an official visit to Cuba for the first time since the two nations established diplomatic relations in 1960. China is Cuba's second-largest trading partner. The two countries exchanged 2.2 billion US dollars worth of goods in 2015.

An economic deal in 2011 has resulted in important advances in several areas. They are science and technology, tourism, judicial cooperation, culture and sports. The two countries are now set to sign nearly 30 intergovernmental agreements and business contracts. Collaboration in industrial capacity, information communications, and new energy will be improved.
