The National Development and Reform Commission has said it will continue to reduce excess coal capacity by advancing economic structural reform. Coal consumption will be controlled to above 5 billion tonnes by 2020, almost one billion over current the consumption level.

The NDRC will increase coal output to half a million tonnes a day to stabilise prices and ensure a consistent supply. China plans to cut half a billion tons of coal and re-distribute a further half billion in the next three to five years by reducing production output, promoting mergers and carrying out industry upgrades.
