India has announced it will ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change on October 2nd.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the ratification date is the same day that leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi, was born. The United Nations says that 60 countries, accounting for around 48-percent of global gas emissions, have already joined the agreement.

The Paris Agreement urges all countries involved to monitor and prevent the rapid effects of climate change and requires governments to initiate national plans to reduce gas emissions. India currently accounts for around 4.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
