Typhoon Megi slammed into Taiwan's eastern coast this afternoon, packing violent winds and torrential rain. 

Across the island, thousands have been evacuated, schools and offices have closed, and hundreds of flights have been disrupted.

Dozens of injuries had been reported even before Megi made landfall.

Megi is Taiwan's third typhoon in two weeks.
