Increased police presence after two bombs detonated in Dresden mosques

Police in the German city of Dresden have increased security outside mosques after a twin bomb attack.

One explosion took place at a mosque and one at an international conference center. No one was injured in the Monday night blasts.

Dresden police say two improvised explosive devices were detonated around 10 p.m. local time on Monday.

One went off outside a mosque while an imam and his family were inside. The other exploded near the city's International Congress Center. No one was injured in the attacks.

And that's where German President Jaochim Gauck is expected this weekend -- as part of German Unity Day celebrations: marking 26 years since the reunification of Germany after the end of the Cold War. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is also expected in the city.

Authorities believe the timing and location is no coincidence. Dresden police chief Horst Kretzschmar says he assumes a "xenophobic motive," ahead of planned festivities.

Dresden is the heart of the far right wing, anti-immigration Pegida movement -- which managed to gather 25,000 people onto the streets back in 2015.

So police are taking this incident seriously -- and have increased security at sites across the city including at three mosques.
