The "I Ching", or the Book of Changes, is an ancient divination text and the oldest of the Chinese classics. Recently a lecture has been held at the College of William & Mary in the United States to help shed new light on the classic text that can help people see the future.

The lecture tittled "the unity of heaven and humanity in I Ching" gathered many curious minds at the College of William & Mary, the second oldest college in the U.S. and a cutting-edge research facility.

"Many foreigners may have heard of Feng Shui, but that's only one aspect of I Ching, one of the Five Chinese Classics. Audience can get to know more about I Ching through this lecture, and also familiarize themselves with the Chinese way of thinking," said Ma Lei, director of Confucius Institute at William & Mary.

"In the West we typically ask what time is it, but in I Ching you ask what kind of time is it. Is it the time to take action or rest..." said Steve Hanson of College of William & Mary.

The series of lectures by the Confucius Institutes are a new effort to promote Chinese  culture to the world. There are more than 100 Confucius Institutes in the U.S. and the lectures will be open to local communities, not just students inside the campuses.

The Confucius Institute at the College of William & Mary was established in 2011, joining a network of over 300 Confucius Institutes worldwide. It is the second Confucius Institute at a public university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
