Tokyo looks to trim budget costs of 2020 Olympics

We look ahead to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and it seems, the city itself did not give hosting the multi-sport event enough forethought, as the Japanese capital is dealing with budget issues with the Games less than four years away. This is the latest problem to affect the 2020 Olympics, including changing its logo over plagiarism charges, and allegations of bribery in the bidding process.

Organizers of the Games held a press conference to discuss the spiralling costs, which is now estimated to exceed 30-billion U-S dollars, four times original estimates. These new figures raising concerns about the burden on Japanese taxpayers, with the city of Tokyo asking for major changes to take place to trim the costs. But that is easier said than done, especially with some projects already under construction.

"Reviewing the process would entail a complex amount of consultations and needs to be done thoroughly with the sport federations, otherwise a lack of trust can be generated and that is our concern. At the moment, it is still unclear to us when the Governor of Tokyo will make that judgement, but I am sure the Tokyo Metropolitan government is fully aware of this procedure," Tokyo 2020 Committee member Hiroshi Sato said.
