To South Africa now, where theatre-makers are staging some bold new work at the Cape Town Fringe Festival. The annual event features a variety of shows and talent in small, intimate venues, which heighten viewers' experiences. One satirical show in particular is resonating with the public.

The Cape Town Fringe Festival aims to draw in the broader public, those who wouldn't usually indulge in a night of theatre. This means the line-up has to be enticing.

"What we see on the programme is fresh every single year because it's dealing with the issues that are at the forefront of the minds of the artists at any given moment," said Tony Lancaster, CEO of Cape Town Fringe Festival.

Edgy, unique and raucous are just some of the descriptions of the 80 productions that are running throughout the city.
It comes as little surprise then that Ballet Must Fall -- a cheeky take on the ongoing Fees Must Fall campaign for free education -- has garnered a lot of attention.

"I think the theme of young people sight of taking control of the industry, your studies, your life is definitely what inspired writing this play. This play came out of a few of us who weren't employed and sitting around there, like there's no work for us and we got all these skills and its going nowhere," said director Jared Musiker.

The play is a thought-provoking work on decolonizing ballet, especially the anxieties of being a black ballerina and the legitimacy of dancing as a career.

"It's like kind of a writer-play tongue-in-cheek holding a mirror up towards the industry but especially coming from a young dancer's perspective," said director Jared Musiker.

"I play them in a way that like, you watch how they teach you and you just mimic that and try to get in their space and audiences love that," said actor Asisipho Malunga.

Besides dance, there's also comedy, cabaret and children's theatre on offer. And it's the convenience of coming in off the street to check out a live performance in an intimate setting that's made the Cape Town Fringe such a popular festival.
