With Golden Week in full swing and with millions travelling the country, which famous sites are they all heading to? The world and indeed China got a view of it during our recent coverage of the G20 Summit, so the picturesque West Lake in Hangzhou is expected to be the most popular destination in China during the holiday.

Hangzhou broke new records on Saturday by welcoming over 1.6 million tourists, an increase of more than 22 per cent compared to last year's numbers. In the capital Beijing, 180 scenic spots received more than 1 million trips, that's up 10 per cent on 2015. The Forbidden City, recently imposed a maximum daily visitor limit of 80,000, and suggested that visitors book tickets in advance. Numbers are up more or less across the board on the Chinese mainland but in contrast, there has been a sharp slump in the number of tourists making the trip to Taiwan. The number of visa applications to the island dropped by a half, from more than 8,000 per day last year to around 4,000 per day.
