Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon won the 2016 international Golden Foot award in Monaco on Tuesday, beating nominees which included Portugugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, England captain Wayne Rooney, and Argentine skipper Lionel Messi. Also collecting awards were Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri and Ajax head coach Frank de Boer.

Organised by the World Champions Club, the award recognises the best active footballer of the year aged 28 and over and is based on votes by media as well as members of the public. Buffon's Italian team crashed out of this year's Euros in the quarter-finals, losing on penalties to Germany in an epic shootout featuring 18 shots.

The team earned a 1-1 draw against Spain in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday, sparing Buffon's blushes after he gifted the visitors the lead. Buffon, the 38-year-old Juventus keeper, was only too pleased to accept the latest addition to his already stacked trophy case.
