Phnom Phen’s development strategy is complimentary to this initiative. The two countries are building the Sihanoukville special economic zone in southwestern Cambodia as an example of collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.

China is Cambodia’s largest trading partner and source of foreign investment. Many hope Xi Jinping’s visit can help expand bilateral relations by revitalizing trade and other economic exchanges.

“We really look forward to Chinese projects that will be brought by Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit. We hope they can help Cambodian small- and medium-sized enterprises, especially in agricultural development,” said Oknha Te Taingpor, president of Federation of Associations for SMEs of Cambodia.

“We hope Chinese companies can set up factories in Cambodia and process agricultural products for export. This is what Cambodia needs most.”
