The WPBSA English Open final in Manchester was a chance for China’s Liang Wenbo to win the first ranking title of his career, but standing in his way was local favorite Judd Trump, who was in great form and looking to win back-to-back titles, after claiming the European Masters last week.

Liang led for most of the match, and closed out the first session with a five frames to three lead.

But Trump responded with a break of 132, which reduced his deficit to just one frame.

Liang remained cool, however, and with runs of 84 and 89, he soon extended his lead.

Although his English opponent won the next two frames, the Chinese left-hander kept his composure to beat Trump 9-6 and win the title.

Liang is just the fourth player from Asia to win a ranking event, following Chinese compatriot Ding Junhui, Hong Kong’s Marco Fu, and James Wattana of Thailand.
