Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People to welcome President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. China is the first country Duterte is visiting outside of the ASEAN bloc, since taking office in June.

The Asian neighbors want normal and friendly ties.

Chinese president Xi Jinping rolls out the red carpet for his Philippine counterpart in Beijing.

Bilateral relations have faced ups and downs over the past few years, reaching the lowest point in 2012.

The two countries have been engaged in a maritime dispute over the South China Sea... resulting in sanctions by China that restrict tourism, investments and trade.

This July, the Hague tribunal backed the Philippines. China boycotted the proceedings.

Now, both leaders have agreed to sit down to write a new chapter.

Duterte is accompanied by over 400 business elite and government officials.

One of the focuses of the trip is economic partnership.

The Philippines' new administration has issued a 10-point socio-economic agenda aimed at improving the business climate and boosting development.

China says it's willing to actively participate by contributing to trade, industry and infrastructure.

The two leaders presided over the signing of a number of deals. These cover the areas of fishery cooperation, tourism, infrastructure development, and the removal of import bans on certain Philippine products, to name a few.

Both countries say they will benefit from closer ties. And this also sets the template for the brand of diplomacy that all Asian nations can follow.
