Pogba's brace paces Red Devils to top of Group A

Manchester United hosted Turkish club Fenerbahce on Thursday. After the Red Devils acquired French midfielder Paul Pogba for a world-record transfer fee, he had so far, failed to live up to enormous expectations. But United fans were given a glimpse of his potential at Old Trafford, as the 23 year old would score twice to lead the hosts to the top of Group A.

United go ahead in the 31st minute when Juan Mata is tripped in the area. Pogba converts from the spot to make it 1-0, before Anthony Martial also scores a penalty three minutes later.

Pogba then lashes home his second of the game, and the third for the hosts, in first-half injury time.

Jesse Lingard finds the net early in the second half to make it 4-0, but former Red Devils favourite Robin van Persie pulls one back for Fenerbahce with seven minutes remaining, and the final score would be 4-1 United. And after the match Jose Mourinho would tell everyone that he's not surprised by Pogba's excellent performance.

"He needs time to adapt. What can (today do) (for Pogba's form)? I don't think much because he's a self-confident boy. He's not the kind of boy who was depressed because some people were saying he's a bad player. He was not depressed, he was just calm, so I don't think today makes a big difference, but it's always nice for a player to score, to score at home, and especially to score such a beautiful goal like he did," Mourinho said.

In other results, Inter Milan coach Frank de Boer breathed a sigh of relief when his side survived an onslaught from Southampton to end a three-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory. Roma conceded twice late to draw 3-3 at home to Austria's Vien. After three matches, three teams have perfect records -- including Shakhtar Donetsk, Schalke, and Zenit Saint Petersburg.
