US political jokes take sharp turn at charity gala

10-22-2016 12:57 BJT

The US presidential debates were tense and heated. And that same atmosphere was replicated at a white-tie dinner and fundraiser in New York. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton traded light-hearted jokes but the sharpened barbs also made their acrimony clear.

Fresh off their fiery final debate. A surreal scene. At times, donald trump -- less light-hearted more heavy-handed.

"Hillary is so corrupt (boos) she got kicked off (boo) the watergate commission (boo) here she is tonight in public pretending not to hate Catholics," said Trump.

Trump stunningly booed by the crowd -- a first at the al smith dinner -- a catholic charity gala -- that's traditionally celebrated as a night of humor and civility.

Hillary clinton offers her own one-liners.

Despite their smiles, their dislike for each other unmistakable.

Trump and clinton separated, this time, not by a moderator, but a man of the cloth --
New york's cardinal dolan. Clinton's jokes self deprecating.

"I took a break from my rigorous nap schedule to be here."

"Michelle obama, gives a speech and everyone loves it, my wife Melania gives the exact same speech (laughter) and people get on her case."

The candidates turning partisan politics into punchlines.
