China is a vast country and its people are constantly on the move to seek better opportunities for their future and careers. So what's the migrant population looking like? Latest data from the Health and Family Planning Commission puts the number at about 250 million in 2015, accounting for 18 percent of the total population. This means one in every six people are migrant workers.

More than half of them are born after 1980, and the number is growing. Regional distribution wise, 75 percent of them have chosen to settle in the more developed eastern areas, while 17 percent chose the west. This is a slight dip for the east, and an increase for the west since 2013.

Income wise, the average monthly take home is about 4,600 yuan, or 680 U.S. dollars. This is an increase of 34 percent and 19 percent compared with 2013 and 2014 respectively. What's also worth mentioning is how this population outflow directly affects total family income. The report shows families with migrant workers have an average yearly income of 18,000 yuan, about 5,000 yuan, or 735 U.S. dollars, higher than families without.
