To start our program today with the devastating effects of Typhoon Haima. China's weather authorities lifted the typhoon alert on Saturday morning, as the storm weakened when traveling further north. Typhoon Haima made landfall in southern China's Guangdong Province on Friday afternoon, triggering sudden downpours in several cities.

Meeting with the typhoon is an approaching cold front, and forecasts say torrential rains will batter eastern China in the following days. Though the storm has been downgraded, it left huge damage to southern China, forcing hundreds of thousands to leave their homes.

Strong gales and violent sea waves battered coastal areas in Guangdong when Typhoon Haima landed on Friday.

And more than 700,000 residents have been relocated..

"This shelter has provided us with food and drink, such as instant noodles and water," said Guangdong resident Li Hua.

Hong Kong also faced the destructive wrath of Haima.

More than 700 flights were cancelled or delayed on Friday.

The typhoon, though now weakened, still affects the eastern city of Shanghai, bringing plenty of heavy rain with it.

"Rainfall is concentrated from Friday night to Sunday morning. It is estimated precipitation could reach between 40 to 70 millimetres during this period," said Kong Chunyan from Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Adding to this misery is an approaching cold front.

Looks like East China will have to brace itself for a sharp drop in temperature over the next few days.
