In Spain, Real Madrid had a chance to go to the top of the La Liga standings as they hosted Athletic Bilbao. Los Blanco star man Cristiano Ronaldo has gone three matches without scoring at home and another goalless game would be the longest drought at the Bernabeu in the Portuguese's career. But luckily for Zinedine Zidane, Real have plenty of other options and a late goal from Alvaro Morata would be the difference in this one.

The hosts take advantage in the seventh minute when Isco makes an impressive run and cut-back to Karim Benzema who knocks the ball through the legs of Athletic Bilbao‘s goalkeeper.

But Bilbao hit back later in the half when Javier Eraso pounces on indecisive Real defending to win the ball back in the box, quickly squaring for Sabin Merino to ram the ball home.

In the 83rd minute, the European champions find their winner thanks to the persistence of Morata who follows up after his first shot is saved to give Los Blancos a late 2-1 win.

In other matches on Sunday, Diego Simeone's men suffered their first defeat of the season as Steven Nzonzi's second-half strike gave Sevilla a 1-0 win over 10-man Atletico Madrid. Celta Vigo took down Deportivo 4-1, Malaga claimed a convincing 4-0 victory over Leganes, and Villarreal's Cedric Bakambu scored in stoppage-time goal to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Las Palmas.

In the standings, Real Madrid lead the table with 21 points, while Sevilla are second on 20. Defending champions Barcelona are on 19 alongside Villarreal, while Atletico slipped to fifth on 18.
