Three French Defence Ministry officials and two private contractors have been killed in a plane crash at an airport in Malta.

The light aircraft crashed early Monday morning just after take-off, killing all five people on board. Officials in Malta said it's the island nation's worst peacetime air accident.

Authorities report that the airport has since reopened with disruption expected on certain services. The French Defense Ministry announced it will conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash.
