German Cup: Bayern beat Augsburg 3-1

10-27-2016 10:53 BJT

Bayern Munich were playing in the second round of the German Cup. The Bavarians would be facing Augsburg, and coach Carlo Ancelotti did not think too much of the opposition, as he started mostly a second-string side, as the holders would look to move to the third round.

One of the regular starters gets things going for the hosts, as captain Philip Lahm cuts inside and rifles a shot from inside the area to give Bayern a 1-nil lead in the second minute.

And the four-time Bundesliga champs work the ball on the right again, as Julian Green is able to head home this Thomas Mueller cross before the half.

After the restart the visitors catch a break, as Mats Hummels fouls Gojko Gacar in the box.

But Koo Ja-Cheol is stoned on the penalty by Manuel Neuer, and the rebound is fired wide. Still 2-nil Munich.

And the hosts get a penalty of their own, when Georg Teigl handles in the box.

Mueller steps up from the spot, but he sails it over the bar -- shocking bit of penalty taking in this contest.

Off to the 68th minute and Augsburg are on the attack -- Jo Dong-Won is making moves on the left side and fires one that catches Neuer off-guard, his strike makes it 2-1 with about 20 minutes to go.

But the holders would be able to seal things late, as David Alaba's shot is completely blundered by the keeper. The Bavarians stroll to a 3-1 win, and move to the next round.

In other results, Dortmund needed kicks to get past lower-tier side Union Berlin. Schalke edged Nuremberg. Cologne was a winner over Hoffenheim. Hanover scored four goals in the opening 19 minutes to crush Duesseldorf 6-1. Second division Greuther Fuerth snatched two late goals to fight back from 1-0 down and beat Mainz 2-1. Mario Gomez had the only goal in Wolfsburg's 1-0 win over second division side Heidenheim.
