It is believed that Chinese sailor Guo Chuan fell into the water around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday Beijing time with his boat more than 1,600 kilometers northwest of Hawaii.

The U.S. Coast Guard decided to suspend the search for Guo on Thursday after finding and boarding his boat, unfortunately there was no trace of him on the vessel.

The 51-year-old Chinese sailor was attempting to sail from San Fransisco to Shanghai in 20 days or less for a new solo trans-Pacific world record. Authorities are now suspending the active search for the missing mariner, who lost contact with his team while sailing his 97-foot super trimaran off the west of Hawaii.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, an airplane crew conducted six search patterns in the vicinity of the trimaran. A navy helicopter was also deployed once they were in range to attempt contact with Guo. Their hails over the radio went unanswered and weather conditions prevented safe deployment of a rescue swimmer to the vessel.
