The scandal is taking a hit on President Park Geun-hye's popularity, as her approval ratings fall a record low.

17 percent. That's the latest public support rate for President Park Geun-hye, according to local pollster Gallup Korea.

Park enjoyed approval ratings within the 30 to 50 percent range during her first three years in office.

2016 has been the bad year for her.

This current scandal is the last straw in triggering massive public anger. A combination of an under-performing economy, a lack of public communication and poor foreign policies have resulted the slippage.

Protests around the country are also a frequent sight.

10 months ago, thousands marched in anti-government rally to protest changes to labor laws. The laws place a ceiling on senior employees, encouraging companies to hire more young people.

Two months ago, Park's decision to deploy an US missile system met fierce opposition both in South Korea as well as outside the country.

However, the harsh approval ratings have not prevented President Park from proposing a constitution change. She says presidents should be allowed to stand for a second consecutive term. Park's presidency will end in early 2018.
