WTA Finals: Cibulkova beats Kerber to claim crown

The final showdown of the WTA Finals began in Singapore. Top seed Angelique Kerber faced Dominika Cibulkova for the title.

After winning two grand slams, reaching the Wimbledon final and claiming an Olympic silver medal in Rio, Kerber was an overwhelming favourite to claim her first year-end championship crown over the Slovakian making her debut in the elite eight-woman event, and into the final.

The German Kerber leads the overall head-to-head match-up, 5-4.

The last of those victories came just a week ago, in the event's group stage, with the world number one winning in straight sets. But it was Cibulkova in blue at the top of your screen, who took control in this rematch, breaking Kerber's opening service game for a 2-0 lead.

The 27-year-old Slovak is serving to close-out the set, and takes the frame 6-3, with a crisp forehand winner.
 
She also went ahead in the second set at 5-4, Kerber fights off three match points, but would can't hold-off a fourth. Cibulkova getting lucky in this rally as her shot clips the net, and lands in as Cibulkova sealed a 6-3, 6-4 win to clinch her fourth title of 2016.

She is the first WTA Finals debutant to win the event since Petra Kvitova in 2011, and a will move up to a career-high fifth place when the new WTA world rankings are released Monday.
