Fresh new looks by up-and-coming designers inspired on the runway in Pakistan's Winter Fashion Week festival. But one of the main attractions was a tribute to fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld by designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin -- otherwise known as HSY.

HSY - dubbed the "King of Couture" by Harper's Bazaar - nabbed rapturous applause as he presented his collection inspired by fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.

"It was, as you saw, a monotone collection, all in black. It was an ode to Karl Lagerfeld, who's one of my favorite designers, who I think is a complete genius when it comes to fashion. All the surface textures were all about creating textures using fantastic fabrics and the kind of embroideries that we have – not necessarily to do embellishments as far as motifs are concerned, but to create fabric; to create new silhouette. And I also think this is the right time for Pakistan to do what it is that we are doing: Take our kind of fabric, our kind of embellishment, our kind of any kind of surface embroidery if you will, and turn into a Western silhouette and be able to show the world that the East and the West really can merge and the merging place is Pakistan," said Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, fashion designer.

Popular local designer Mona Imran unveiled her latest bridal collection at the event.

"I launched and showcased my 'Gold Rush' collection today. The inspiration for this collection was our golden era of Pakistan. Keeping that in mind, the colors used include beige and gold tones. I also added jewel-toned colors, which included blue, green and red. The fabric used was purely jamawar (traditional fabric) and I used a lot of nets and silk, while the stitching patterns used were traditional, a mixture of Eastern style and diffusion patterns," said fashion designer Mona Imran.

One of the first Pakistani designers to gain international acclaim, Amir Adnan, also presented his new collection "The Way Forward."  Adnan said fashion is becoming an integral part of Pakistan's economy.

"The highest form or the most value addition in our (main) agricultural produce, which is cotton, is fashion design garments and that's what we do. So the biggest contribution to the economy of Pakistan by fashion designers is that they have managed to add value to the largest produce of the country. So I think it's a great contribution and events like this is a sign that fashion designing is now recognized as a staple and a standard industry in Pakistan," said fashion designer Amir Adnan.

Other designers featured included Maheen Karim,Sobia Nazir, Sana Yasir and Hamza Bokhari.

The three-day fashion event ends on Tuesday, October 1st.
