Winter winds and snow are sweeping across parts of North China. And that's good news for skiers in Urumqi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

The Silk Road Ski Resort in the south of Urumqi opened on Saturday 15 days ahead of previous years. The resort has expanded its ski trails, increased its number of cable cars and improved its hospitality facilities.

To attract amateur skiers, the resort is offering visitors a chance to ski on a professional trail at a low price. Skiing has become increasingly popular in Xinjiang Autonomous Region in recent years. The region has 28 ski resorts and more are expected in the coming years.
