After five years of negotiations, 24 countries -- including China, Russia and a host from the EU -- have agreed to create the world's biggest marine park in the Antarctic Ocean.

The park will cover a massive 1.55 million square kilometers, or roughly the size of Britain, Germany, and France put together, and it will cover about one-eighth of the Southern Ocean, which is home to more than 10,000 species, including penguins, whales, sea-birds, colossal squids and the Antarctic tooth fish.

However, it will be protected from commercial fishing for 35 years.

Antartica is the world's least explored continent, and its isolation allows scientists to examine how healthy ecosystems are affected by climate change.
