Tsang Yok-sing, president of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has said the Council asked for assistance from the police following last week's violent protests.
Tsang said the Council had noticed that there were calls online encouraging protesters to attack the council's building again on Friday. Surveillance footage showed protesters broke into the building violently last week while the council's Financial Affairs Panel was examining the North East New Territories Development Plan. Tsang stressed that the attacks will not stop the Council discussing the plan.
"He may think he can stop our regular meetings by such means, using violent behaviour and intimidation to force our meeting to stop. Of course this is a bad message. In the two cases of such violent actions, if the Financial Affairs Panel decides not to continue discussing this controversial issue, the message sent out to the public will be that you can stop the legislative council discussing controversial issues by violent means," Tsang said.
