Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying says he supports Beijing's interpretation of Hong Kong's oath-taking law. Leung says he has the duty to implement the Basic Law of Hong Kong in accordance with Article 48 of the Basic Law.
He says he and the SAR government will implement the interpretation fully. Leung stressed Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the country. He says the Hong Kong people have the duty to uphold national unity, territorial integrity, and security, as well as the dignity and interests of the Chinese people.
"The interpretation by the Standing Committee of the NPC can further clarify that if lawmakers reject to take the oath "genuinely or solemnly", they will be deprived of their right to stay in office. They will also be deprived from any other post in the office. They will neither exercise their authority or enjoy the rights accordingly," Leung said.
