The first-ever Emoji conference is taking place in San Francisco.
The small, simple messaging symbols started in Japan in the late 1990s. They are now an everyday part of modern communication. The emoji lexicon currently stands at around 1,800, but the number constantly growing.
Organizers of the conference say the meeting is not just a celebration of the emojis’ origins. It is also meant to provoke debate about the future of emojis.
