President Park Geun-hye to let parliament choose PM

South Korea's president Park Geun-hye has said she will allow the parliament to choose her prime minister -- a major political concession as anger mounts from an escalating influence-peddling scandal.

"If the parliament recommends another prime minister candidate under the agreement of the opposition and ruling parties, I will appoint the candidate as the prime minister who will practically lead the cabinet."  Park Geun-hye said.

Park made the decision after Tuesday's meeting with National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun. This concession means the liberal candidate for prime minister she nominated last week is likely to be replaced.

This move will also likely further weaken her politically, and curtail her ability to govern in the 15 months she has left in her term.

Park is currently facing tens of thousands of protesters calling for her resignation, and an investigation into whether her confidante Choi Soon-sil manipulated government decisions.
